The California Wildlife Conservation Board to give $5 million for the wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon

The National Wildlife Federation just announced that the California Wildlife Conservation Board (WCB) has voted to approve a $5 million grant for the wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon.

“On behalf of the Department, I wish we had done this project decades ago for the benefit of our wildlife. This item before the WCB is a definite must do.”  Chuck Bonham, Director of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The bridge will cross the 101 Freeway at Liberty Canyon and it is vitally important for our entire region as it will reconnect an ecosystem for all wildlife. The population of cougars in the Santa Monica Mountains has been strained for decades by development and diminishing open space, and many large cats have been killed as they attempted to cross the freeway in search of greater territory. The crossing will minimize those deaths and increase genetic diversity within the species, saving that group of cougars from certain extinction.

We at COSF are supporting this project through our Julia Osborn Gourley Memorial Campaign. Julia was an early Director of COSF and President for 10 years. She passed away in January 2020. Because she was a strong advocate for the wildlife crossing, her family has requested that donations given in her name be directed to the new crossing, and we have set that up. If you would like to help, you can do so through our donations form. Thank-you for your support!
