Update on COSF’s 2025 Eco Scholarship Award

Isabella Lee is COSF's new 2025 Environmental Studies scholar. Isabella, who graduated from Thousand Oaks High School, replaces Greceldy Hau as the recipient of one of COSF's two scholarship awards because Greceldy will be pursuing a college major other than environmental studies.
Isabella says that her determination to work toward a professional role in mitigating climate change stems from her high school experience. In her junior year she spent hours before and after school investigating the effects of ocean acidification on phytoplankton. This foundational creature of marine ecosystems is, in Isabella’s words, “the perfect model organism” for revealing ocean health. Isabella’s work earned her first place at the Ventura County Science Fair.
She continued her research as a senior, investigating toxicity of textile dyes on phytoplankton to understand yet another aspect of human impact on the environment. Through the research program, she served as an academic peer mentor for over 30 other AP Research students.
Isabella will be attending University of California Santa Cruz in the fall.
Our other awardee, Christian Fonkalsrud, will be going to Cornell University.
Congratulations and best of luck in the fall to both Isabella and Christian!
