FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Thousand Oaks, California – January 4, 2021.

The Conejo Open Space Foundation (COSF) is launching a new scholarship for Ventura County high-school seniors who will be attending two- or four-year colleges or universities. Starting with the fall 2021 semester, COSF will provide $1,000 continuing scholarships for two students pursuing environmental studies-related majors. The scholarships will continue for the students’ four years of study, as long as they remain full-time students, maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher, and continue with an environmental studies-related major.

Says COSF President Jerry Westby, “One of COSF’s main missions is to educate the public on using, maintaining, and sustaining our wonderful open space environments. We think the scholarship program is a perfect way for us to realize that goal by investing in the next generation, many of whom may return to the Conejo Valley after college.”

A panel comprised of local environmental leaders will choose the two scholarship recipients from the pool of applicants. They will be looking for candidates who plan to enter a career directly related to sustainability, ecology, and preserving the natural environment. In addition to environmental studies, other relevant majors include, but are not limited to: ecology, environmental engineering, natural resources and conservation, and sustainable agriculture. The scholarship winners will be announced April 1, 2021.

Brendan Callahan, COSF board member and director of bond programs, sustainability, maintenance, and operations for the Oak Park Unified School District, says, “Our president Jerry Westby brought this idea to me last year, and I told him ‘I’m in.’ I was excited to partner with him to establish this scholarship program. The next generation of environmental activists have arrived and are prepared for the challenge. We are thrilled to offer this opportunity to support the growth of our future global stewards coming from Ventura County.”

The deadline for application, which includes a 500-word essay detailing the applicant’s reasons for pursuing a career in environmental studies and two letters of recommendation, is January 31. Interested seniors are encouraged to apply now. For more information and to access the application form, go to http://cosf.org/scholarships/.
