The June 19th Where in the Conejo Contest photo was of the Plateau Rim Trail and Scream Rock
This week’s contest was particularly difficult and we only had one person who got both parts of the question correct. Congratulations to Randy Wagner of Thousand Oaks! Thanks to all who responded.
“The Scream” is a painting created in 1893 by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch (1863 – 1944). It is his best known work and has become one of the most iconic images in the art world. Its original name in German translates to “The Scream of Nature” but in his native Norwegian, it’s name is “Shriek.”
You must click on the photo in the upper right to get an enlarged view in which you can clearly see the rock outcropping near the top at center that resembles the painting. You can also better see the Plateau Rim Trail at the bottom.
To the left you can see the painting (one of five versions) next to a close-up of the rock feature. The similarity is incredible!
The Plateau Rim Trail is just about 0.8 miles long and connects to the Western Plateau Trail at both ends in the Conejo Canyon Open Space. It has the general shape of a “U”. It is a favorite trail for hikers and mountain bikers – coming close to the edge of the rim above Hawk Canyon at one point. A bench has been installed there so visitors can enjoy the view. For mountain bikers, the many twists and turns with rolling hills but no major hills makes it really fun to roll through.
If you would like to try this trail, we can suggest a moderate hike or bike ride of 5 miles that includes the Plateau Rim Trail, the very pretty and shaded Hawk Canyon Trail and the Peninsular Trail where you can spot Scream Rock if you look north.
