Congratulations to Cindy Wagner of Thousand Oak who provided the correct answer and was selected as the winner. Thanks to all who entered the contest!

The beautiful Hawk Canyon Trail is in the Conejo Canyons Open Space area that also encompasses the Western Plateau. Many of the oaks on this trail were badly burned in the Hill Canyon wildfire in November, 2018. The larger, older oaks have protective thick bark and nutrients stored in their root systems which may provide enough nourishment for the trees to rejuvenate. The trees’ awe-inspiring recovery is also aided by  water from the stream along the trail. The Hawk Canyon Trail can be reached in Newbury Park either via the Hill Canyon Fire Road or the Western Plateau Trail. It also can be accessed via the Hill Canyon Trail from Santa Rosa Valley.

We hope that our “Where in the Conejo” contest inspires enthusiasts like you to find new places in our beautiful open space areas that you wouldn’t have otherwise known about.
