Congratulations to Tony Reed of Newbury Park who provided the correct answer and was selected as the winner. Thanks to all who responded!

Space Mountain is the informal name for the section of the Los Robles (West) Trail from the east end of Spring Canyon Fire Road at the bottom to Angel Vista at the top. The photo is of the bench at the top of the switchbacks, about half way to Angel Vista.

So how did this trail come to be known as Space Mountain? Some people believe the many switchbacks are reminiscent of the Disneyland ride of the same name, especially for mountain bikers who can coast from the bench almost all the way to the bottom, winding around the turns the whole way. The Disneyland feeling is even stronger when riding at night when the headlight only illuminates the trail directly in front of you and everything else is pitch black! Take a look at the photo to the right to see.

On the other hand, old-timers say the name comes from the fact that the mountain is topped by a number of antennas, giving it a futuristic NASA-like semblance.
